The Winthrop Singers is a student-run choir and not-for-profit, specialising in sacred music old and new.

Our Mission

The Winthrop Singers exists to foster the musical development of young musicians while serving the community in Perth, WA and beyond.

We provide WA university and TAFE students who have choir experience with the opportunity to perform regularly, tour in WA and beyond, record albums, develop leadership skills, and generally have a fantastic time learning the ropes of choral music, while serving the community through performances, regional tours and workshops.

The Winthrop Singers is worthy of recognition on the world stage.

Our Story

Upon arriving at the University of Western Australia in 2007, English researcher Dr. Nicholas Bannan was surprised by the absence of choral opportunities for students at the university. The Winthrop Singers was then conceived to fill this void as the UWA counterpart to the sacred college choirs of Oxford and Cambridge. The choir soon flourished and went on to perform at major venues in WA, record several albums, and tour internationally.

At the end of 2020, Dr. Bannan returned to England and entrusted The Winthrop Singers to its student members. Now, 15 years since the beginning, the choir has become established as a free-standing not-for-profit company and expanded its horizons beyond UWA, opening auditions to all WA university and TAFE students.

One of Perth’s best kept musical secrets.
