Audition Information

How do I sign up to audition?

To sign up for an audition, fill in the online expression of interest form above. Auditions are usually held at the start of each university semester. If you happen to apply outside of the intake period, your application will be put on a waiting list and you will be contacted before our next round of auditions.

When are open rehearsals and auditions held?

An open rehearsal (open to anyone interested!) and a round of auditions is usually held at the start of each semester.

What should I expect in the audition?

The audition has the following components:

• general vocal assessment: e.g. range test

• sing something you know

• prepared melody and interval exercise

• sight-reading

• some questions about your musical background

Make sure you come warmed up and ready to sing.

Sing something you know

Please prepare a short piece or song to sing that you already know well and which you can showcase your voice with. We want to hear you sing at your best! The piece/song can be in any genre, but classical is preferred. And be advised you will likely only be asked to sing part of it. If you can’t think of something to prepare, just sing Happy Birthday.

Prepared melody and interval exercise

In advance of your audition, you will be asked to prepare an interval exercise and your choice of one out of two melodies to sing in the audition. This tests your ability to learn music in your own time. Please sing the melody tunefully and think about where you will breathe. The interval exercise is more difficult and will test your ability and confidence in pitching various intervals and remaining in tune.

Sight-reading

You will be given a notated rhythm to clap and a melody to sing at sight. You don't have to be great at sight-reading already before joining the choir, but we would like to gauge your skill-level.

When will I hear about the outcome of my audition?

You will receive the outcome of your audition via email within a few days following your audition.
